Porcelain Tile and Ceramic Tile

Ceramic Tile Ottawa

Ceramic tile has a timeless quality: when most people think of “tile” they’re picturing ceramic. From classic high-gloss glazed tiles to terracotta to pretty traditional patterns, there’s an almost endless selection of great choices.

That’s why we’re here: to provide our expertise and help you choose tiles that you’ll love for decades to come.

Ceramic Tile Advantages

Ceramic tile is a great option for people who want to make their homes more attractive and increase its value. Ceramic can be used for walls, backsplashes, and many can be used for floors. It’s easier to maintain and is much less expensive than stone tile.

Variety

Ceramic tile comes in many styles, colours and shapes. Often a tile is available in different sizes and shapes so you can get creative with patterns on your walls and floors. There is something for every taste.

Easy maintenance

Depending on the glaze, ceramic tile can be water resistant or even waterproof, stain-resistant, and easy to clean. Most tile floors just require vacuuming and occasional mopping. As long as the grout is sealed properly, it can be periodically freshened up with baking soda paste. (If cleaning grout is a concern for you, select larger tiles and use a darker grout colour.)

Cost-effective

Ceramic tile is available at various price points, and is generally the most affordable option if you have your heart set on tile.

Durability

Ceramic tiles are generally extremely durable, and when installed properly can last for several decades.

Hygienic

Because it doesn’t absorb odors, mold, or bacteria, ceramic tile is an excellent option for kitchens, bathrooms and entryways where you can find wet floors. If you’re an allergy sufferer and need to keep your home really clean, ceramic is a great choice.

Water-resistant

Ceramic tile is highly resistant to water and humidity, and is ideal for anywhere in your home where floors can get wet.

Should I Choose Ceramic Tile or Porcelain?

Porcelain is a type of ceramic tile, and both are basically made of clay.

Choose ceramic tile if:

  • Cost is a bigger consideration.
  • You don’t need extreme durability.
  • You love the look of glossy glazes.
  • You’re installing it yourself.

Choose porcelain tile if:

  • You’re after a more subtle, natural appearance.
  • Durability is of major importance (you’re tiling a floor, and especially if you’re tiling a commercial space).

In both cases, a solid subfloor and expert installation make a big difference to how long your tile will last. That’s why we offer expert tiling services to all our customers.

Tips for Selecting Ceramic Tile

While it’s easy to get starstruck by all the choices in colours and patterns, start with understanding where you want your tile to be installed. There are different grades of ceramic tile, and some can be used on floors while others can only be used on walls.

If you’re tiling a floor that might become wet, a rougher texture will help prevent slips and falls (high-gloss tiles on a bathroom floor are a recipe for danger).

Consider using larger tiles on floors to create a more spacious look. Smaller tiles are great for walls, backsplashes and countertops. To create a feature wall, consider a “3D” textured style, pre-configured patterns, or even a mosaic.
