Vinyl Flooring

LVT can be made from a variety of modern materials — that’s the secret behind the wide range of styles available and its ability to look like natural stone. Some options can mimic the semi-translucent appearance of marble, others the foliated texture of slate. Still others look like porcelain or ceramic tile in solid colours, subtle variations and bold patterns.

LVT is extremely easy to maintain. All that is required is to vacuum or sweep regularly to remove any hard dirt that could potentially leave a scratch. For fine dirt, a simple damp mopping will do. While LVT doesn’t stain easily, it’s best to clean up spills as soon as possible.

Good quality LVT often lasts 10–25 years, but can last much longer if it’s well cared for. The quality of the installation can make a difference as well. Durability can vary with the material and the thickness of the top layer, but it is possible to get LVT that’s so tough you can drop a kitchen knife on it and never see damage. Vinyl tile flooring tends to have a natural springiness or “give” to it which makes it comfortable to stand on for long periods. Additional cushioning underlayment can add to this effect (and provide sound dampening while you’re at it). While ceramic, porcelain and stone tile tends to be cold underfoot, luxury vinyl tile can feel pleasantly warm. (If you want to install LVT on a cement floor, however, you may want to consider an LVT-compatible subfloor heating system.)

LVT is a highly affordable option, especially considering that it’s so simple and easy to install, and therefore less expensive. Stone and other hard tiles, however, often require expensive and time-consuming preparation.
